Statement from the Director of Athletics, Jim Knowlton

Dear Friends of Cal Athletics:

I want to take this opportunity to extend warm wishes to you and your family. As we look towards the future of Cal Athletics, we want you to know how much we appreciate the vital support that you provide our student-athletes. From cheering on our Golden Bears at home and on the road, to the gifts you so generously provide our 30-athletic programs - none of this would be possible without you.

In an effort to increase revenues and expand our philanthropic efforts, I have compiled a list of nine priorities that will help guide our vision for the 2024 calendar year.

  • Create a vision and strategic plan for our department.

  • Enhance our student-athlete development services.

  • Be exceptional in our performance in the classroom and in competition - graduating student-athletes and winning championships

  • Develop a sustainable long-term financial plan.

  • Create a plan to become compliant with Prong I of Title IX (proportionality among genders) from our current compliance through Prong III (fulfilling the interest and abilities of the underrepresented gender).

  • Focus on fundraising for and building new facilities for our softball and beach volleyball teams. I want to extend a huge thank you to Bill Ausfahl, Lynda Brothers and Brad Brian for their fundraising efforts for these two, long-overdue projects.

  • Execute Listening Days action plans for our 30 teams and 15 administrative units; each plan will feature five priorities per program that will be aggregated and prioritized for implementing in a deliberate manner.

  • Develop the execution plan for the comprehensive campaign for Cal Athletics including endowing scholarships and head coach positions, enhancing student-athlete development support, and raising funds for a basketball practice facility.

  • Continue to integrate the athletic department with campus and further develop relationships with faculty, students, staff and the greater Berkeley community.

Thank you for your support. Fiat Lux and Go Bears!
